Surfing Beaches in the UK0

Think of surfing in the UK and cold water and prolonged flat spells spring to mind. But the UK has some of the best surf spots in Europe, and even the world! It has a beautiful and varied coastline which is home to everything from beach and point breaks, to reefs and hidden away coves. Surrounded by coast, good surf spans the breadth of the UK – from spots on the east coast which pick up North Sea swells, to the most consistent breaks in Cornwall which bear the power of the North Atlantic.

Surfing in the UK began in the 1960s when a group of Australian lifeguards arrived in Newquay with the first fibreglass Malibu boards to be seen on these shores. Fast forward to today, and the UK surf scene is thriving. Surfing contributes significantly to local economies in the south west and its popularity increases annually, with thousands of holidaymakers taking surf lessons and trying surfing for the first time.

Autumn is the best time to surf for the most consistent conditions, yet surfing in the UK is an all year round activity. And for those who don’t live near the coast, the addition of two in-land wave parks in 2015-16 will bring surfing to even more people, whatever their background and ability.
